The plug is made from 2” insulating foam board from a home improvement store. The base was layed up on the cowl so it matched the contour of the cowl. The affected area on the cowl was covered with clear packing tape and sprayed with mold release. The 2 parts (scoop and base) were epoxied together and dressed with a couple layers of glass cloth, bondo, and spot putty to smooth it out. Finally I sprayed 2or 3 coats of epixy primer, sanded it to 2000 grit and called it good.

Nice work Jeff. That oil cooler scoop looks like it’ll come out great. Lot of effort there.

The heavy effort is in the plug. Rest is easy peasey!

Yeh Jeff, that is really nice. I find it fascinating how you are able to make such nice parts at home with your own hands. I am definitely going to try to take the EAA composite class this year.

Steve - I’m thinking to make a cf seat pan (vac bagged) too... and a baggage floor. Hope to have a boot cowl mold this weekend. Weather may be a factor though.
Eddie - there are a ton of vids out there. Fiberglast.com has a bunch of resources (vids and PDFs) at the bottom of their home page. Buy some stuff and get to work! I use comositeenvisions.com for supplies.

Oil cooler scoop cleaned up a bit. 7.1 oz! Wet layup, not vacuum bagged.
