Rotax 912 UL
OK, I have a 912iS but I believe all of us, at initial install, have an empty oil cooler. I just did my first oil fill per the manual. I would refer to the manual on method of filling and purging the oil system. On mine it as simple as disconnecting the oil return line from the tank. Plug the tank and put a 5psi pressure into the drain line after capping the tank. Pull the prop through (60 times for me) and oil pours out the return line into a bucket.

How is your cooler mounted? Can you mount it upside down?
I suppose where there's a will there's a way. Our 7SS has a right side up cooler. I would think that given the fact that I have flexible oil lines to and from the cooler, you could have the cooler hang right side up, purge and fill it, then flip the unit upside down and install the hardware. Maybe I'm over simplifying things.

Sandgroper,
Everything I have heard, as well as logic related to fluid flow would indicate the fittings should be pointed up. When purging/venting - air goes up. Fittings down has some chance of holding air in the cooler, to become dislodged later.
