I also have been using the Ray Allen foam grips for over 10 years and notice no deterioration or "crispiness". As has been said, a new piece of foam when the time comes is cheap and easy.
Light finger pressure against foam is far more comfortable than against a hard surface.

Totally, but if you trim the stick as much as you can, and it's still too tall with the grip, then that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

Does anyone know the diameter of the control sticks offhand; 3/4",7/8",1"?

I'm going to order my grips and this is the parameter they need

Mine (a Series 5) are 7/8".
