Is it mandatory to use the air guide baffle for the 912uls? That is the fiberglass shroud on top of the engine that directs cooling air over the cylinders and crankcase.

No it is not mandatory. In fact I don't know of anyone who is using it, or where to even buy one.

On a tightly cowled airplane they are needed. The RV12 comes to mind. They have very small intake openings and need the air directed onto the cylinders.
Kitfoxes have more airflow going through the cowl and don't need the baffle.
They can be had from Rotax.
OK, I learned something.

I checked with Leading Edge Airfoils and they agreed with Larry, with the caveat to monitor engine temps and add it if needed. They have not seen a need on Kitfoxes.
