    Default Rotax tool kit?

In the current installation manual for the 912 ULS, it talks about a "Thread bolt, part #240880" that is "Part of standard tool kit supplied with each engine". This is a bolt to lock the crankshaft when testing the slipper clutch, and other procedures. Did anyone receive this "standard tool kit" with their new engine? I'm not real sure who to talk to about this, and Kitfox wasn't sure when, or if Rotax (or the distributor?) stopped sending them with new engines. It's all a little "fuzzy", it seems to me. Seems like one of those bolts would be a good thing to have.

I don't know of anyone who ever got a standard tool kit.

A call to one of the distributors can help you with a list of need to have, nice to have and don't really need tools. There aren't that many.

Also downloading the service manuals can help determine what you need.

    John,

I bought my engine directly from LEAF; and, the toolkit came in an orange pack with the tools including the allen socket bolt for locking the crankshaft. That was a few years ago.

I dealt with LEAF after the old bankrupt skystar forgot to send the toolkit along with the engine that was supposed to come with the toolkit

Also some other minor things like a spark plug wrench. If I remember to bring my camera with on my next trip to the 'port - I'll get a photo of the kit.

You do need the crank lock bolt for checking the condition of the slipper clutch possibly as well as other maintenance procedures.

My engine came with the old magnetic plug with the small internal hex and I replaced it with one with the which has the large external hex so you have some hope of getting it out when you want to. Based on what I had to pay for the new magnetic plug......go get a payday loan before you order any bolts from Rotax.

Mine came with the toolkit when I got the engine Feb. 2014.
Screw driver, spark plug wrench, locking screw and allen wrench.
Probably $300 worth of stuff in Rotax terms.

For what you guys pay for these engines, I would expect them to come with what they say is included. That part sells for just under 7 bucks.

That said you can make one from an M8 x 50 cap head bolt for probably a buck. The end needs to be ground down like this:

Intended for use with #1 at TDC.

Here's my Denver secret: A&A Tradin Post Ace Hardware at 4509 S. Broadway in Englewood - a few blocks South of Hampden on the West side of Broadway. They have the most amazing selection of bolts and hardware that I have seen anywhere in town! From the store entry, diagonally to the far corner in the back on the North side of the store - about 2 full aisles of bolts and specialty stuff. Great for when you need something and can't wait for an online order. Check them out.

I needed one I ordered it from Lockwood. Either Lockwood or one of the other Rotax Dealers sells the Crankshaft Locking Pin THREADED BOLT M8X50.
Crankshaft Locking Pin Part Number: 240 880, and it’s Price: $6.69. It will cost more to Ship it than buy it.

I agree wholeheartedly... it's a really cheap little kit and it's a shame to have to pay for one of these bolts, especially considering shipping costs added on. I'm a little aggravated that I don't know if someone just screwed up & didn't send the tool kit with my engine, or if Rotax is trying to save a measly buck now. If it was important to include them with engines before, why not now? And why do they still mention them in their "latest" installation manual? Kitfox didn't seem to know if they still included them or not when I talked to John. It's a minor issue, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can certainly modify my own bolt... does anyone know the dimensions of the turned down end? Does the length of 50mm include the end?

I really appreciate all the replies.

John, the end of the bolt is really meaningless.

The end fits into a 45º notch in the crankshaft counterweight. So, that being said, a radius on the end of a M8 bolt would be fine.

Looking at the rest of this "kit" I'd say you are better off without it. A cheesy plug wrench, cheap metric allen wrench and nearly useless screwdriver? Looks like the junk that came with my motorcycle. Better could be had from Harbor Freight...
