When the Chandler, Arizona family comes to visit, we usually engage in a different form of "hangar flying". This time it was trying different flap designs. Mr. Fowler was shown to be pretty smart.

Wind tunnel experiments? Use to do those with my Dad as a kid.

Lowell, you have a smoke source for flow visualization in that tunnel?

Very cool idea Lowell, Took my 6 year old grandson to his first airshow this year. Now he wants to be a jet pilot when he grows up. Excellent to get the young ones interested.

Smoke was one of the things we discussed early on, but when he was here, I guess we forgot to work on that. We did think of the model railroad smoke generators, but nothing beyond that. We could measure lift in grams, and vary angle of attack. This time he brought hot wire cut airfoils - all the same - but with different flap designs with an ingenious way of varying the angle of flap deployment. All measurements were taken with all airfoils at the same angle of attack. This kid was on a team that qualified for the internationals in a robotics competition. I just sort of stand back and watch.
Always great to see another Engineer on the way
