I'm a big fan of Garmin Pilot. Add a Garmin GLO and you have a great system.

I like Wing X. Most allow a 30 day trial. Try them all.

Wing X was the one I decided on. This was over a year ago, but at that time...it was the only one that operated "track up". It was just what I liked. I use it on my I Pad and works very well. I tried out a few of them using the free trial...try them all on and see which one fits.

Now the second half of the question. Has anyone had any issues with the feds using an Ipad chart? The gent I talked to told me he always kept a chart in the airplane "just in case". I don't know if he was talking about an Ipad "crash" or a ramp check.

I'm a little rusty, but I remember learning "ARROW" while I was learning to fly. Now I've read that one of the "R"'s is no longer needed. The radio license is no longer needed. But from what I remember just the Airworthy cert, registration, owners manual, and weight and balance were mandatory to keep in the aircraft.

No requirement unless you are large AND turbojet and/or part 135 or part 121 and/or IFR.

However; lets say you violate a restricted airspace or hit a newly constructed obstruction, because it wasn't shown on an outdated chart or you had no chart - then the outdated chart or no chart could be considered a contributing factor in an enforcement action (IE: different and bigger problems).

So, (IMHO) always a good idea to have current reference (that you can comfortably rely on - with the FAA) or a very good memory of everything in the airspace you will travel in. Needless to say, I carry a few charts just in case. My brains just not that good!

If anything, it just eliminates on more possibility of a "contributing factor" statement - that all insurance carriers read as "pilot stupidity".
