    Default It's too Hot!

I was reading the newspaper this morning with my cup of coffee. There was an article about the local Zoo. It seems it was so hot that a water buffalo evaporated !
Went out to the airfield to fly my plane. I used Pete's (from Hell Paso) advice about putting a block of ice on the engine to cool it down for start but it melted. It's too hot !
Finally got the engine started and flew to the local airport. To heck with taking the doors off. I need to remove the windshield !
Nobody at the local field either as they are all inside ! Its too hot!
Sure wished I lived back in the West again as most of you guys do.

Geez, us folks up in the PNW haven't seen the sun for two months! It's cold, drizzly and foggy. So much for my 150 hour goal for this summer.....

Well, soon we just might have three Kitfoxes in the Cameron Park airpark in the Sierra foothills, just east of Sacramento. The local lore is that unless a storm front is passing through, it is a fly day. We do get hot in the summer - 100s - for a few days (usually cools to low 60s overnight), but the air is dry, snow is rare, and the valley fog in winter is usually a no show at 1300 ft.

We need at least six - three more to go, visitors welcome.

It was so hot and windy here that my instructor turned down the offer of a sandwich on Block Island ; ) visibility was unacceptable.

91 degrees, big-time humidity... We made 7 to's and full stops... in a 152 with full gas and two adults... a little VOR refresher as well. Full cross wind @ 6 - 15... on two landings, the cross turned into a tail wind... that was a little freaky but we survived...

Landed at the Goodspeed airport right in East Haddam, CT... looked like a sidewalk from above, approach is over a bridge and the CT river... now I realize it's not a backcountry, 6,000 foot, sage brush laden mountain-top 500' runway approach that you guys out west perform, but it is a challenge and it was an absolute blast...

On takeoff, I had to watch for the trees on the right side... and had to make a gradual climbing right because of the hill to the left...

Couple more times out and I'll be a Private Pilot again...

    Flying is the best!

Oh ya Half Moon Bay, last time I was there, it was because someone had to pee and a Rans had to be jump started. It probably isn't too hot there now.

It was so hot flying back from Oshkosh that I tied a rope onto the piulot side door so it would hold the door open an inch or two.

I found out what density altitude was. Taking off from Fayetteville, AR the ATC cleared me for an intersection takeoff (obviously he knew of Kitfox STOL characteristics). I should have declined. Since the airport is surrounded by hills, after taking off I had to fly through passes and valleys to climb out. That was partly because of watching my engine heat, but mostly because of full fuel and 8000 lbs of camping gear. What an adventure!
