    Default Garmin GTX45R Antenna

    Hi All,

For those using the Garmin GTX45R, what antenna are you using? There are several referenced in the Garmin manual, but I know Rami and several other companies have comparable antenna as well.

Curious to see what everyone is using.

    Thanks.

Comant. That was recommended by avionics shop….probably because they are pricey. ADSB data picks up great and works even far into the back country.

No need to spend Comant or Rami money. The $27 TED 104-12 antenna has been installed on thousands of airplanes with good success.

See this post for photos of how Phil did his transponder and ADS-B antennas. Mine are mounted inside my wings, but haven't been tested yet.

The transponder ground plane is a 5.42" diameter circle. If it's a little larger, no harm done. I made mine from galvanized flashing from the roofing section at Home Depot. See here.

If your system has a 978MHz ADS-B receiver as well, here's the TED 104-17 antenna for that. That ground plane would be 5.89" diameter.

I use the TED 104-17. Never had any issue. Except, I have broken one off so I'm on my second one so Im glad their inexpensive. I like the idea of inside the wing.

I mounted all of my antennas inside the fuselage and have had good results. Note the ground plane does not have to be round but I used the required radius as the minimum distance from the antenna connection to an edge in cutting something close to a square. I'm guessing that it doesn't make much difference in a cloth covered A/C if the antenna is up or down but I take the down convention as a good habit.

The garmin installation manual lists the acceptable antennas and their part numbers.
I know of someone using a Comant dual port CI 2480-201. Thats slick.
I am using a TED transponder antenna on the belly and a GA35 facing upward from under the turtle deck. Also on my second TED probe. Easily breakable but they are cheap.

Thanks everyone for your input and help. I think I'm going to go with the Ted transponder antenna.

Patrick, I was thinking of doing the same thing for my GA35. Do you find it gets in the way while loading/unloading from baggage area? How did you mount it?

I have an avionics tray behind the pilot seat with remote radio/transponder and a couple other things. the top of the tray has an angle that puts the antenna in a similar spot to the ELT on the other side. It does not interfere with the baggage area at all.

Hey Patrick— do you have a photo of that tray? I’d like to see how you did that.

    Here's one.
I know of two other planes with this tray so I think it's common.
I went back and lightened it up before cover.
With heavy nosed setups it helps to move things rearward anyway.
