Default Engine Swap and Cowling Differences

    Hello
I'm new to KitFox flying and would like some info from more experienced folks.
Specifically, I would like to swap out a O 200 Continental with a Rotax 912ULS. The 912 is currently in a actively flying plane with low hours.
The cowling on the Model 5 Kitfox is the smooth style and housed a O 200 Cont. Other than a new engine mount would the cowling need to be modified or replaced with a version designed for a 912ULS.

    Thanx
    Tim

Hi Tim. Sorry to say that you will need an entire firewall forward. There is nothing that crosses over between the two installations. From cowlings and actual firewall, to even the throttle cable. You'll be going from an air cooled power plant to a water cooled power plant.

Tim, since that was your first post on the forum, I'll assume that you're not familiar with the personnel at the Kitfox factory. Brandon is a long-time employee and knows the Kitfox inside and out. He and John McBean are the go-to guys for technical questions from the field.

    Thank you Eric and Brandon.

Kinda figured that. I understand there is quite a wait for the Kits.

Nice that the different kits exist however. I'll keep plugging away at it.....

    Welcome to TeamKitfox.
If I may ask, what is the story with the Continental engine? I like my 912is but if I had an air cooled engine already I wouldn't think twice about flying it. Maybe the weight or age of the engine is the issue?

    Hi Eddie

The Plane had a O-200 previously. Now it has none. Rotax is what I have available quickly.

Any idea if the wings are swept forward for the heavier engine? Not sure how that would effect putting on a lighter 912, but maybe something else to look into.......

hello,, resurrecting the post I 'm considering Kitfox 5 with a Rotax 914 . That,s the second engine, the 1st one was a Continental 0-240 . Of course, the engine mount was changed but NOT the cowling , and nothing done to the wings swept

I'm ok with the cowling as it is now BUT have some concerns about the swept... although that change was done many years/hours ago, I 'm not sure if it really flies the way it should be
    thanks for the help
