    Is starting at 5300 rpm wot on the ground a good place for this older rotax?

    I would say that is a pretty aggressive climb setting, but a lot depends on the type of property I guess.

    Personally I get 4900 rpm static wot, but I live in a country that doesn't rise above sea level

    I'm reading that normal cruise is like 5000-5400 with a WOT in air is 5500.

    I have 912ul with a Kiev 3 blade. When I was 1st setting it up I read somewhere that 5150 was ideal. I flew it that way for a while. Climb was great but I was a little disappointed with my cruise speed, about 95 mph at 5200. It would redline in level flight at full throttle. I added 1 degree of pitch and my cruise at that same rpm jumped up 12mph or more but my climb suffered. I backed off 1/2 degree and got the perfect combination. Climb was almost as good as my 1st setting and cruise was just as good as the second setting. And it won't redline at full throttle now. My guess would be to set the static rpm at around 5000 and see how that works. James Thomas

    The photo below is copied from the manual that came with my 1996 Rotax 912 UL. Caution on the low side has been a watchword since I started reading the forums and email lists in the early 90's However, I don't think it is really necessary. I do know some guys that will on occasion cruise approaching the max 5800 for periods much longer than 5 mins. For many of the cross country flights I did in my 900 hours, 5500 was typical.
