    Default Oil Cooler Mounting

Hi Guys, I'm getting ready to mount my oil cooler on my Model 4 Round Cowl 912 and am looking for a little guidance. I am going to mount it up front right under the gearbox but I'm having a little trouble figuring out what to mount it to and how to build the mounting brackets. Does anyone have any pictures of there mounting setup?

    Thanks in Advance~Cain B

Don't have pictures of a round cowl Model IV installation, but the first two pictures are a round cowl Model VI with a 912s.

The second set of pictures are the oil cooler mounting on a smooth cowl Model VII with the 912s.

I think KitfoxLLC is installing oil coolers in front of the radiators (in the NACA duct airflow) on the new models thay are building. I don't have any pictures of that installation.

You can see there are two different types of mounting hardware for each of these installations.

Hope this helps you a little.

Cain B, I'd get the brackets from John McBean at Kitfox. That will save you building 3 sets before you get one that will work.

    Cain B,

In the old days we would see a few Model IVs with cut outs in the round cowl opening to accommodate the oil cooler. In short, the positioning of the cowl is important if the oil cooler is fit without cowl mods. I am including a couple of pictures of my set-up and a couple of the Series V with 7 FWF that I am helping with. On the V, the cooler is positioned right behind the opening on the cowl with provisions for the shutters to be mounted aft of the cooler in the case he finds he needs them.

I'd like to see if anyone has a good source or found a good way to mount oil coolers over the past few years.

Any of the shelf model 4 bubble cowling brackets that work?

    Hi Cain,
On my IV I first mounted the cooler under the gear box. It was not in direct
Air flow propwash. It worked ok,but on hot days and long climbs my oil temp
Would slowly climb until I backed off.
The second mount moved the cooler above the gearbox (I don’t have the stock
Air cleaner carb heat box) Now I can climb as long as I want and my water temp
And oil are great some would say to cool. I will try to post a few photos soon

I'd be interested in seeing how you mounted it.

You re responding to a post from 2011, the OP sold that plane some years ago. Seems like you might have good info for Hockystud though

I bought the brackets from kit fox and they don't seem to fit in my round cowel model 4. I may have to go with mounting in front of the radiator.

Most Round cowls needs to be modified to let the oil cooler fit. There are pictures here of cut cowls
