Finished my LS Repairman Training

I just completed the Rainbow Aviation Light Sport Repairman Training. It was a great class, I definately learned a lot. We even got to work on a Kitfox Model IV. It is definately in need of some TLC, and some air time. Well now I'm going back talk to the FAA FSDO, get my Temporary Repairman Certificate, and start working on the Annual for my Kitfox SLSA.

Last year, I flew up to get my Kitfox worked on at the Factory. I took a Tail Dragger refresher with Stick and Rudder. They needed to do a 100 hour on one of their planes. In talking with Paul L. while I observed, he recommended getting certified as an SLSA Repairman. Paul L. had gone to the Rainbow training and recommended it as a good course. The Certification would enable me to work on any SLSA, and enable me to do 100 hour inspection on SLSAs, and do Annuals on ELSAs. I had gone to Rotax Training about 3 years ago, but that Certification only gives me the knowledge on how to do oil changes, spark plugs, maintenance, repairs, on a Rotax. Without the Certification as a Light Sport Repairman, I still needed to have an A&P or IA work with me and sign off the work. With the LSRM I can sign off my own work on the SLSA. I had gone to Blue Ridge Community College in North Carolina for the Rotax Training. I had registered for their LSRM traing but ended up had to back out of it because of work. I really glad I went to Rainbow for the training, much better instructors. The Rainbow Class was 15 days non stop (brutal schedule), but Brian & Carol Carpenter were great.

We covered Regulations, rigging, covering aircrafts, patching of tears, rib stitching, propeller loading, propeller repair, propeller pitching, Rotax engines both 2 stroke and 4 stroke, mag timing internal and external, Letters of Authorization (I need to write one), composite work fiberglass, graphite, Kevlar, dealing with FSDO, brakes bleeding and repair, corrosion, wheel bearings, inspections, checking the slipper clutch, removal of the gear box, 5 year hose replacements, carb repair, carb balance, trouble shooting fuel problems, ignition, mechanical, propeller issues, proper methods of wire tie, etc.

In my opinion it is a great class, and as I've said I get to do my own annual this year. I've also got some work that needs done, no more waiting for the A&P to fit me into his schedule. I can get-er-done according to my own schedule.

FYI, if I were building a Kit, I would have wanted to take this class. The training would make covering and wing lacing an easy non intimidating effort.
