Re: EFWD Build
Thanks Dave.
The primer had cured for weeks. I have used MEK on the panels without problems. The spinner turned out great thankfully. Note that the spinner started off doing the same thing as the rest but I got heavy on the spray and it all disappeared. Surface of the parts was still smooth after wiping it down with MEK. Whatever was left behind, imagine streaks on a mirror after cleaning it, has caused the paint to pool up on top of the streak and got real shallow around the sides of the streak. I think that is what happens with a "fish eye". I am not sure if I describe it well. Im going to attempt a sand and apply some more paint on one of the cowls and see what happens. If the problem is evident after that I will stop and begin the sanding job. I will need to buy a whole new quart of paint if it doesn't work out this way. Not a big deal I suppose. At least I know there is a fix one way or the other. Its all in the name of education and recreation. :D

Re: EFWD Build
Oh man!.
OK, anybody ordering a Rotax 912is should know. I ordered my 912is believing the exhaust was part of the purchase. NOPE. I spoke with John M this morning. He tells me the exhaust comes with the motor if you purchase the engine from Kitfox. $1200 addtl, for the exhaust if ordered through California Power Systems. I am not sure what the overall cost difference would have been. I live near CPS so shipping was not a cost I would have incurred with them and they covered the engine shipping from Europe so I thought it was a deal. Kitfox tells me that their exhaust, being part of the engine purchase, does not require any modification. I am under the impression now, that the exhaust I will be receiving will be requiring some modification of the stinger. Otherwise, the stinger protrudes out to the side of the exhaust such that the hole that you place in the bottom cowl will lay somewhere out into the side wall of the cowl vs right in the floor of the cowl. I may be incurring an additional cost of having a custom stinger made so that it comes off the muffler and immediately turns towered the ground and protruding through the floor of the cowl. If anyone has used the 912is exhaust as ordered from Rotax, would you mind commenting on how the install of such turned out if you didn't modify it in any way. Maybe a photo.
Eddie
I should add, 912is on a SS7

Re: EFWD Build
Hi Eddie,
That was a nasty surprise! I ordered my Rotax from the Australian dealer and it came with the exhaust. See Pic attached. You see that the tail pipe is seperate and can be angled to preference. My exhaust came with two spring attachments for each of the entries to the muffler - I understand some come with only one. Also note the hefty reinforcing around each port. The only other point I would make is that my tail pipe developed a crack right on the bend. I took it to a specialist welder and he fixed it - I actually think it is stronger now than the original.
In talking with the Australian Rotax dealer I remember him saying that while they quote INCLUDING exhaust, other dealers in different countries don't. Frustrating. Anyway, I hope you get it sorted Eddie. I know it is a another expense at the pointy end of the project but it's worth getting good quality or you will have issues with vibration and cracking. As for it protruding out the side - As you can see in one of the photos, mine is right on the curve of the cowling but that wasn't/isn't an issue.
I wish you luck - getting close now!
cheers

Re: EFWD Build
Well thank you so much Ross. It looks just fine to me. Thats very helpful.
I spoke with CPS this morning (Bryan). He was very helpful.
Thankfully I am not on a fixed income and I have the ability to work addtl hours as needed to satisfy my toy addiction. Im very fortunate. I have seen free exhaust offers from Rotax when you order an engine. I was unpleasantly surprised to get it without the exhaust as all the pictures in the publications include the exhaust. I should have scrutinized the print closer. I would have seen that the exhaust was not on the list.

Re: EFWD Build
Eddie,
Your exhaust from CPS should be completely welded except for the muffler pipe (stinger) Be sure that's what you get and not a muffler, pipe, etc.. to make a muffler. You should be able to immediately install the exhaust system to the engine.
You should be able to use the stinger as is..

Re: EFWD Build
Eddie, would you share the Rotax part number for the complete exhaust system?

Re: EFWD Build
Larry, Im currently not in possession of that information but tomorrow I can provide it after I pick it up. I simply asked Bryan to order what I needed. Kinda sloppy huh?
