582 water temperature management
I’ve never operated a water cooled two stroke engine.
After reading about “cold seizures” I’m concerned about maintaining proper block/water temps in descent. I am in the frozen North and will want to be well versed before the weather gets cool. Heck, I don’t want to hurt my engine now in 90 degree flying wx!

Make sure to use a thermostat in the engine. Especially when it gets cooler out. JImChuk
Re: 582 water temperature management
A 150 degree tstat?
It’s a grey head 582.
I’m seeing water temps going as low as 130 on landing and am warming back up before take off. Is that OK?
Re: 582 water temperature management
Probably a 150 would be fine. For some reason, I'm thinking a stock Rotax one was 135. Do you know for sure you don't have one in there now? JImChuk
Re: 582 water temperature management
I believe there is one but honestly don’t know for sure.
Re: 582 water temperature management
IIRC, mine is 160 degree OMC thermostat. 130 seems pretty low, you’re supposed to have at least 150 before applying full power.
Re: 582 water temperature management
I’m aware that minimum water temp for TO is 150. I’m also aware that it’s more important to have the cylinders good and warm not just the water. After landing my water temp has to be brought back up to at least 150 before taking off again. Not doing any touch and goes. Only full stop and go. I’ll have to double check the temp on landing but I know it’s lower than my green arc.

Re: 582 water temperature management
Assuming a correct thermostat etc,if your temps are still dipping in finals check the vent line from the cylinder head to the header tank/radiator cap, this is only a vent line but flows enough coolant to allow over cooling.
Installing a restricter will help keep the temperature more stable.
Re: 582 water temperature management
I installed a
Flap on my radiator to help keeps temps up on descents and for faster warm up
